I got some horrible news last night about 92.9 KICK FM. Apparently there is trouble from the CRTC, because of some of the content that appeared on one of the shows.
I'm not here to say whether this is right or wrong, because although I know a lot about the regulations of the Canadian airwaves, i am not an expert, and with the way things have escalated I don't want to accuse any innocent parties concerning their involvement.
I do think that the word bunk describes this situation pretty well for most of the students at Red River College. Especially those that are going into second year next term. The students all have good intentions, even those that have broken the rules, and I think that it is pretty low that whoever did make these complaints took it to the level that has KICK FM on the verge of being not renewing their license. Now a small group of people from Red River have to feel that it was them alone that caused the station to come under scrutiny.
I'm not sure if there is anything that can be done now to help future students get the station back to where it was before my class got a hold of but I would suggest email the CRTC, the station itself, and maybe the heads that run the station above station manager Rick Baverstock.
Blame who you want. I have heard rumors of who is involved and if they are accurate I have been on both sides of this argument. My conclusion is that two wrongs don't make a right in this situation, and it is wrong to victimize people that aren't the target of frustration even if someone has treated you shabbily in the past. Take it up with them personally, don't target students.
In closing I just wanted to write that the Give and Go Hockey Show is on Wednesdays at 5PM, followed by the On-Slot at 6PM.
Keep on listening, and hopefully something positive happens in the end.
